DivergentThe Ending

In Divergent by Veronica Roth, at the end, Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Marcus and Peter are on the train to the Amity headquarters.  A lot of the Abnegation refugees are already at the Amity headquarters. Drew, Molly, Myra and Edward are factionless. Jeanine, Eric and the other Erudite are trying to regroup. There is a quote in the book that catches my attention, "Eric called Al's suicide brave, and he was wrong. My mother's death was brave. I remember how calm she was, how determined. It isn't just brave that she died for me; it is brave that she did it without announcing it, without hesitation, and without appearing to consider another option".

This quote is saying that Tris's mom died for someone which is...Tris! But if you were to really think about Al's death, it was for himself. You can't really say who he is protecting, therefore it can't really be for anyone. But I maybe wrong about that. But Al probably just wanted to escape the world of factions and pain. Tris's mom was playing her role of a mom by protecting her daughter. It was a little creepy to me when she was calm about it, but it was for her daughter.

It caught my eye because Al died long before this was mentioned. Then it is brought up again in a common comparison. My book club discussing about this one day so it was brought up again! I am glad it was brought up again to be compared with Tris's mom's death. I was able to conclude in my opinion that Al's death wasn't brave.

In conclusion, the book ending with suspense. Especially with the characters all over the place! I wonder what will happen in Insurgent because of all this suspense! Hopefully, Tris will be find happiness to overcome her loss.

In divergent a huge topic came up. That topic is fear. it really interested me when Four  said "But becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning  how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that's the point." This really made me think because I never thought about it that way. I used to think that once I got over my fear, I would become fearless until another fear replaced it. But now that I think about it, what Four said is correct.

When I have a fear, I become really scared about it.  When I get over that fear, I'm
not  that scared about it anymore and when I'm reminded of that fear or when I encounter it, I don't end up freaking out about it like I probably would have done before because I already controlled my fear so I know how to react to it. I think that is really the only way to solve your fears. By controlling it because I think that you never are able to get rid of a fear because your mind has already gotten to know the fear as a bad thing so whenever you encounter that fear anywhere, you still might be a little scared when you see it. For example, last year during spring break me, my brother and our friend were robbed. For a while I was kind of scared to go outside because the robbery happened only two blocks away from my house and I was scared that the 3 guys that robbed us would come back to harm us because we had them arrested. So me, my brother and my friend layed low for a while. After a while I stop being scared and was able to go outside and do things again but til this day I still don't step foot in that school playground anymore because I'm a little nervous that they might come back.

I think that Beatrice has controlled one of her fears. I think that fear is that she's scared to be alone. Earlier in the book she said she would rather be dead than factionless because she wants to fit in with people. Also, when she was going through the simulation with the crows, I think the main reason she was scared was because she was alone and had no one there and she must have felt that she needed people there to help her. But as the story goes on I think that Beatrice becomes more independent and she can spend more time alone than she could have before. I think its a good thing that she becomes independent because I think that when your alone, you can think better and I think Beatrice just needs some time to think.

The topic of fear in divergent

Fear has so many different meanings in divergent. Each person has thier own definition of fear. Some people think that fear is just something that is in your head.people think that fear is something that you can overcome. Some people think that fear never leaves you but it lessens. I think that fear is just a thought that is created in your head , but the danger is real. I honestly think fear is bad and we should get rid of it.

I think that fear is bad. It holds a lot of people back from a lot of different things. For example phobias. If you're scared of heights then it would hold you back from an airplane or sky diving. A lot if people can't do things.

People believe that you can overcome fear. I disagree but I agree. I think that fear is an aspect we all have whether we like it or not, it just may be less noticeable. Yet maybe you can over come a fear by facing it. Over coming the fear is not always the end result but it is a possible result that isn't rare.

When people are scared of something I think that it is something created by choice by the person. The danger is real most likely. Like fear of heights. There is danger of the heights but fearing it is just a choice. Like fear of swimming and such. Overall I think that people should be scared of too many things without a danger being behind it. But it is still a thought that the person creates.

Faction Stereotypes

In the book Divergent, everyone is separated by what people think will be their finest quality. But because these people are separated, they begin to think different things about each other. Abnegation is thought of as goody two shoes, and Dauntless is thought of as crazy and cocky nut-jobs. Some people, like Jeanine try and support these wayward ways of thinking about each other. I noticed that throughout the book different faction stereotypes, or things people expect from certain factions, keep showing up.

Abnegation is all about selflessness. For people in the other factions, including Abnegation, it is unusual for a Abnegation-born to transfer to Dauntless, and that is because of Abnegation stereotypes. On page 246 when Tris is getting another tattoo, her friend Will calls her on it. People from Abnegation are called Stiff in other factions as an insult, because Abnegation have very stiff and strict ways of life. Will says, "I can't believe you got another tattoo," and Tris responds, "Why? Because I'm a Stiff?" It's hard to tell if Tris took this as an insult of not, but she still reacted to the stereotype of 'stiffs'.

On page 359 Jeanine is interrogating Tris, trying to find evidence of Divergence. Tris has to lie and become the stereotype-Dauntless person the other factions expect from them. The book quotes, "The other factions see the Dauntless a certain way. Brash, aggressive, impulsive. Cocky. I should be what she expects." Jeanine isn't the only one who expects that from Dauntless, according to Tris.

Some people seem to think being Divergent is like being diseased. You need to be contained and tested, until it is completely out of your system. On page 242 Tris' mom is telling her about being Divergent. Tris' mom says, "We can't be confined to one way of thinking, and that terrifies our leaders." Divergent people don't have many stereotypes because they don't hang around long enough for them to develop, but on page 429 it is said that Abnegation houses/ produces the most Divergent people. I think that is connected to the Abnegation stereotypes and how the Divergent work and think.
Abnegation members are the most selfless of any other faction. People who are Divergent can't be forced to think one way. Four tells Tris that when she is acting selfless, she is at her bravest. But that isn't a stereotype; that's all Tris.

Faction or Family?

Reading Response- (i only read to page 454 when i wrote this response)

At this ending point in the book, war has broke out. The Dauntless are turned into robot soldiers. They are completely "brain-dead and obedient" and un-aware that they were turned into soldiers to fight against Abnegation. Because Tris is Divergent, she is not able to be taken control over and she dos not become brain-dead. When her boyfriend is captured and taken away, when she is forced to shoot one of her closest friends, and when she loses her other best friend to the Dauntless leaders who make her brain-dead, when she loses someone she is falling for, she is forced to regain herself and find her family to try and stop the war. As i read on through the end of the book, I realize that Tris is losing everything she gained through Dauntless. Why does the author chose for Tris to reunite with her family but lose all her friends from Dauntless?

In the beginning of the book, when Tris choses Dauntless, I think it was because she wanted something different. She was a brave girl from the beginning and she wanted to try something new. She new she was special and she felt that Dauntless might be a good fit for her. However, when she choses to switch factions, she makes the choice to say goodbye to her family and friends and everyone she knows. I think it was a bold move to make to switch factions but very scry for Beatrice (Tris).

Tris makes a lot of knew friends in Dauntless and she enjoys her time there even when it's hard. However, throughout the entire book her family is mentioned. Whether it's one of her fears in the simulations to have to face the decision of killing her family or killing herself, or when her mother visits on visiting day, or when she goes to Erudite to find her brother. Overall, I don't think she truly ever loses her family. She forgets about them when she's focused on Dauntless work but, she never loses them. I think from the beginning of the book, when Tris leaves her family for dauntless, I knew they wouldn't be gone forever. They were a big part of her life and she couldn't just say goodbye to them forever.

All in all, I think one reason that Tris loses her friends from Dauntless, is because the ones closest to her are the most important. I can' wait to read the ending of the book to see how everything works out for Tris. Will she ever find Four or Christina again? Even though her mother has died, will she become close with the rest of her family again? Will she be able to shut down the simulations that are controlling the minds of all the Dauntless people? Not everything has worked out perfectly for Tris throughout the book so i wonder if the ending will be happy? ( After reading the end of the book, I realize some of the things I wrote wouldn't apply anymore ((like her losing Four)))

I really loved this book and recommend it to anyone who liked the hunger games post U.S.A theme. This was a great book and i can't wait to read the second one!

Divergent finished

In Divergent, things are a lot different than things are in America nowadays. In the beginning of the book I thought that the government wouldn't have any problems but that wasn't the case. In the end of the book there is an attack. The Erudite and Dauntless attacked the government leaders in Abnegation. This angers me as a reader because it didn't seem like Abnegation did anything wrong. And worst of all it seemed like this was  a perfect government. Everyone goes to a place that fits their personality. But the leaders of Erudite and Dauntless got selfish, and power hungry.

I thought that the way the government worked was fine. Everyone goes where they fit in most, everyone has a better life. But the Erudite and Dauntless leaders got greedy and decided to take over the government as well as destroy Abnegation.

I think it's wrong to ask for more and more when you already have something great.  The government was set up perfectly. Leaders from Abnegation, chosen because of their known selflessness, lead as they see fit. I don't think there was any reason to change that.

And because of what the Erudite and Dauntless did, Abnegation was attacked.  The only reason Beatrice wasn't being mind-controlled is because she is divergent. But being divergent doesn't really make you that different. In the book they make it seem like it does but it doesn't. They make a big deal out of it but she made her choice. And in the end being divergent went well.

In conclusion I think it was for the factions of Dauntless and Erudite to team up against Abnegation because they didn't like the job they were doing. Their whole government was built to prevent war  and keep the peace so the least they could do is talk it out first and try to reach a compromise.

What is so bad about fear ?

In the book " Divergent " by Veronica Roth fear to me is one of the biggest topics to think about because it is talk about a lot in the book and also in the world . Fear is an emotion that causes feeling of dread ; an emotion that someone is afraid of. I think fear has a different meaning to everyone because it might mean one thing to me but it could mean the whole opposite to you .
The quote "face your fears" is an untrue fact because I don't think that anyone should do something they are afraid of . For example on page 237 it says " cowardice is how you decide to be in real life " . This quote means a lot to mean because it states the truth cowardice is what you want to do .
And on the page 230 the quote " to be human is to have fear " this quote is also meaningful because it also states the truth there is not on person in the world who doesn't have a fear . Fear is a thing every single person has .
This connects to the real world because people in the world try to hid there fears and not try to overcome them but I don't understand why people would want to hid there fears , I think showing the world your fear is a good thing because it makes everyone see who the real you is and how you live every day ! Do you agree or disagree ?

The Selfishness Of the Non-Selfless People

I just finished the book, Divergent, by Veronica Roth, and the ending of the book really surprised me. Janice, a woman from the Erudite faction, is the leader of a disaster plan to completely try to wipe out the Abnegation faction. She is doing this because Abnegation poeple are the only people allowed to rule in the governemnt, that being because their faction values selflessness so while leading the government they think about what is best for the people instead of being selfish and only thinking about themselves. Janice thinks that the smartest people should lead the government because they are the people who know exactly what to do. Janice did not take on this project alone. Eric, one of the many leaders of the Dauntless faction, was also apart of her plan. Janice thought that if she got Eric to side with her, he would help wipe out the Abnegation people. Wipe out meaning clear them of the 5 factions making there only be 4. In a much simpler tense, he would help her by making the people of the Dauntless kill the Abnegation people.

I think that Janice is very selfish because she does not honestly want to lead the government. No, I think that she just wants to be in control of everything. She is probably in control of her life now and she wants more. She wants power and she thinks that leading the government will give that to her. She is really only thinking about herself, especially when it regards Eric. Janice is using Eric to her abilities and I bet that in the next book, she might drop him like a hot tamale. That is an act of selfishness which is something that would be frowned upon in the Abnegation faction.

I'm not being a hypocrite by taking about Janice's selfishness. I am selfish too sometimes but Janice's selfishness resulted in her trying to take over her world. With my selfishness, I can't name a time when I was selfish and it affected a group of people in a bad way. I might be selfish and make myself something without asking my mom if she wants anything but those are minor things. Like when people tell little white lies. Selfishness is not something you are born with, its not a gene that has already developed inside you. Selfishness is something people develop by being around the wrong people. in a prior assembly, guest starring the coach of the Brooklyn Nets basketball team Avery Johnson, Mr. Johnson continuously said say yes to practice and adults but say no to the wrong people. Selfishness is a characteristic of  the wrong people. Of course, no one can be perfect. You might never believe that you are but everyone is selfish in some way or another at some point of your life. I just have a problem with Janice's great deal of selfishness that comes with all the idea of her attacking them.

Tris's Changes Throughout Divergent

The main character Tris in the book Divergent by Veronica Roth changes a lot throughout the book. Tris changes a lot in her physique as well as in the way she thinks. Despite being small in stature, Tris manages to become very headstrong by the end of the book and think for herself. Here are a few ways that Tris changes from beginning to the end of the book.
One way that Tris changes throughout the book is that she becomes very independent in the way that she thinks and acts. During the Dauntless Initiation Tris was telling herself that she has to stick up for herself and she can't be pushed around by the bigger initiates. By the end of the book, Tris is confident and she knows that know one will try and mess with her. This shows me that because Tris became hard in the way that she thought during the Dauntless Initiation, it helped her out in by the end of the book where she had to put her skills and hardness to the test when she was fighting for her life. This is just one way that Tris changes mentally throughout the book.
Another way that Tris changes throughout the book is in her physical appearance. In the beginning of the book Tris was skinny and small and incapable of defending herself. After the Dauntless Initiation Tris looked at herself in the mirror and she liked what she saw. She noticed that she had more muscle and she looked like someone not to be reckoned with. I think Tris liked the way she looked because being strong made her feel like she was very powerful and she could defend herself in any situation, which is something that she had a problem with in the beginning of the book. Tris's changes in her physical appearance helped her throughout the book because they made her have a tougher mindset as well as having a stronger body, which was a deadly combination against anyone trying to mess with her.
In conclusion, I think that Tris's changes throughout the book helped her from beginning to end because it helped her get through some hard struggles, such as her mother and father dying. I think that if Tris didn't change the way that she did throughout the book, that the end would've been completely different because she wouldn't have had the same values as she did if she didn't change. All in all, Tris's changes from beginning to the end of the book were all beneficial to her.

how are beatrice and katniss slimar how they differ.

In the book diverant by veronica Roth and hunger games by Susan Collins both main characters differ from each other. They also have slmialirites. They both go threw changes, from beginning to end. Some slimarites that Beatrice and Katniss both share is that they live in a distopian world. Each of the governments really show in both books that they don't care about the people in it. Another slimaritie they both share is they both change in their books. In the beginning they are both worried and nervous. When Beatrice is in the choosing ceremony, she isn't all happy. Shes worried and feeling not to well about leaving her family and joining the dauntless. Katniss is the same way, she scared about leaving her family. And also joining the hunger games. Also they are simlair to each other because they both get over come there fears and become brave and talented souls. In conclusion these are reasons why these two seem simlair. Even though they are simlair in ways they both differ. Beatrice's governoment is a concil of 50 people and then they are all sepreated into differnert factions based on their personalities. Most family's in hunger games are often poor, including katniss family them self. some own businesses but not to many. When kids are 16 (both boys and gilrls) they are choseen into the hunger games. This is one reason they differ. Another way they differ is by their motivation. Katniss doesn't get as easliy motivated as beatice. Which to me is huge diffenence. In conclusion these two characters are the same in differnet ways, but also diffenert for many reason. But those reasons above convince me why, they are.

The Erudite, Pure Genius... or Pure Evil...?

The Erudite are a faction full of inteligent people that belive that ignorance is what causes conflict. They are extremely smart in a number of different areas: Math, Science, ect. Are they pure genius? They are responsible of most of the technology the their faction and other factions use. Without the Erudit. There wouldn't be the simmulations. The other factions would lose many of the technogy they rely on and use.

Although... do they not have evil inside of them? They created the simulation that made an entire faction turn against one of their fellow almost defensless factions. They made them kill innocent people without them even knowing what was happening.

Imagin being in the position of the Daunless. You go to sleep one night. Then you wake up. Then you realize that you're not where you were when you went to sleep and you have a gun in your hand. You then find out that you were responsible for the deaths of who knows how many innocent Abnegation. How would you feel if that had happened? That's how the entire Dauntless faction had expirienced when they had woken up.

Also, imagine that you were divergent, and that you were in Dauntless. You do exactly what Tris had done. You follow the rest of the Dauntless, but then you do one thing wrong and people know right away that you are an enemy. Just like in the story, what if one of your friends had started to come after you? Shoot them before they shoot you?

The Erudite had put the entire Dauntless faction in that position. They had basicly destroyed two factions factions just to make the government allow other faction in the government, but after what they had doone. Is there really an organized government anymore? Everything has changed now between the factions. The government that was supposed to be a "Utopia" was all ruined by the Erudite and there "wonderful" plan to attack the Abnegation. Why would they throw two factions into chaos just for that? Was there something they were hiding? O.o

What's the point????

Divergent By Veronica Roth

bravery |ˈbrāv(ə)rē|

noun

courageous behavior or character.
ORIGIN mid 16th cent. (in the sense [bravado] ): from French braverie or Italian braveria, based on Latin barbarus (see barbarous ).

To be dauntless is to show fearlessness and determination. So those that show an especially strong amount of determination are picked off? It doesn't make much sense. Also, if Four has Four fears and hasn't made any changes, is the 2nd and 3rd parts of the initiation flawed? If the only point of the fear test is too help you lose your fears, and it doesn't work with everyone, should it be mandatory? The only thing that makes more sense, is when Tris overhears the Erudite plans for the war, it means the Erudite want to remove anyone smart or cunning enough to figure out the plot, my one question is why now?

Also if the Erudite were just going to turn the dauntless into soldier-zombies, why didn't they do this the first time Abnegation wasn't being fair. The only answer is that this war plan has been in the works for years, and the dauntless only now have enough manpower to do the takeover.

I think that there has to be more, some underlying cause completely unrelated to the rest of their complaints. I'm betting that Abnegation isn't as clean and innocent as we and Tris think it is. I think that Erudite may be the bad guy here, but unfortunately true goodness seems a bit impossible in this world, we see that in the lying behind Candor.

In all, Dauntless isn't fair to to it's initiates, Erudite's plans are strange, and Abnegation might be flawed.

Facing Fears.

In the book divergent by Veronica Roth is based on how the government was destroyed according to what their perspective was. The main character is Tris she can manipulate the simulation. She has an advantage because she’s divergent; being divergent is that they can’t figure out what faction they belong to because they have characteristics of other factions. As Tris has enemies who want to kill her. The decisions that she has to make are difficult because she doesn’t know who to trust. We can say that she may be courageous for helping Four with his fears. But she has an advantage on knowing how to manipulate the simulation.  By being able to do this she has more of an advantage because she knows how to control her fear.

When the protagonist is in Four’s simulation she doesn’t experience fear because it’s not her own fear. Four only has four fears but those four fears don’t leave or more fears come. Tris helps Four because it’s easier for her to face the fear because it’s not something she can relate to.  It’s easier to face a fear you can’t relate to, that statement can be argued. When Tris has to experience someone else’s fears, the fear of being kidnapped becomes one of her own. But on the other hand she helped Four with his fears. Comment bellow whether or not someone else’s fears can be your own.

This connects to the real world because even the toughest person can be the most terrified or can have fears you never imagined. Fear doesn’t come out of nowhere, controlling your own fears can be hard but how would you control someone else’s fears? Teenagers these days seem to care about nothing but in reality they are. They may be able to control it or maybe make it disappear by doing stuff they shouldn’t be doing. But fears of others can be related to our own. For example the fear if dying or seeing a loved one die is a fear we all face but how we face it.

is being different bad?

So far in the book Tori tells Beatrice that being divergent is dangerous as her brother was divergent and his faction found out about that. He was thrown into the chasm and they said it was sucide. But Tori knew her brother so she immediately knew they killed him. Also Beatrice overheard someone talking about finding all the Divergent rebels. I think that being different is not a bad thing. It's can be a good thing.
all the faction symbols. abnegation, candor, amity, erudite, and dauntless.

In Beatrice's world being different from any of the factions was dangerous. But why is that? It's because they pose a threat to their "perfect" world. People who are divergent can manipulate the stimulations they sometimes give them. During the second part of training Beatrice was in the stimulation for 3 minutes. Accoeding to Four that's 3 times faster than the other initiates. Four warned her to control her seflessness impulses.

In the the world people are scared of those who are different from them. They don't try to get rid of them but they talk about them and ignore them. And that causes a lot of emotinal damge. What I don't get is why are people afraid of those who are different? What's so bad about them? I think that people are wired to be afraid of thosse who are different.

Faction Before Blood

In Divergent, Tris is having a dilemma discovering where she is on the scale of the factions. She was originally in Abnegation, which teaches not to be selfish, and to do good for others. Tris has sneaked her way into Dauntless and is trying immensely to pick up on their tactics and traits and is eagerly trying to become one of them. It is difficult for Tris to let go of her Abnegation traits so leniently because she has worked so hard to build them up so they set Abnegation perfectly. As much as she fights, she will always have traits that she learned from being in Abnegation.

When Tris was reunited with Caleb, he said that he "wants to call her a betrayer." I think that because since they are so close, he can't bring himself to call her that.  "Have you ever heard of faction before blood?" he said to Tris. Tris is trying very hard to adapt to these new Dauntless lifestyles and she tries to act as if her family was never her family. She truly knows that she dearly loved her family and she misses them with all her heart. Tris is trying to be tough and backfire at Caleb's hurtful comments because that's the only way she'll be able to survive in Dauntless.

I can connect to Tris's situation with Caleb because sometimes, when talking to friends from elementary school, they comment on how much I've changed from fifth grade. I get very agitated when they express these thoughts because everyone has changed. The whole school environment has completely changed and we hang out with completely different types of people. I have recognized the fact that I have changed because of middle school. Sometimes I reminisce about the days in elementary school when I had a level of innocence that I don't have anymore. I feel like I have some traits and quirks that I will have forever. But as time goes on, interacting with different types of people will change your perspective, sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way.

Can you teach courage?

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, the main character Tris chooses Dauntless as her faction. Every faction has an initiation to determine which initiates possess the qualities they look for in a member or if they will be factionless. The dauntless initiation in particular is extremely competitive and intense. The things tested in the dauntless initiation don't necessarily teach bravery, but is it possible to actually teach it?

In the first stage of Dauntless initiation you are taught combat. The initiates learn hand to hand combat and how to use a gun, then they fight each other. I think that instead of teaching bravery, this teaches cruelty and violence. These initiates are competing for a top spot and adding physical competition will bring out the feelings of resentment that they have toward one another.

In the second stage of Dauntless initiation the initiates are given a serum that takes them into a fear landscape. They have to calm down to escape the fear landscape. On page 230 Four says, "Ever heard the phrase 'face your fears'? We're taking that literally The simulation will teach you to control your fears in the midst of a frightening situation." Instead facing their fears I think the initiates are ignoring and burying their fears to get out of the simulation. Ignoring your fears sounds more like cowardice than courage to me.

Courage is defined as: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc.; without fear. I don't think it is possible to teach a quality like this. I also don't think anyone is without fear. In everyday life, courageous is used as a relative term because people will always fear. That is what makes us human.

In conclusion, the Dauntless initiation isn't really teaching courage. I think it is impossible to be completely fearless, therefore impossible to teach fearlessness. What the Dauntless initiation teaches is violence and fear.

What do you think is an effective form of teaching people to be courageous (if you even think there is one). Also, is it healthy to be afraid of things?
In Divergent the character Tris changes throughout the story just like Katniss in The Hunger Games. They both are uncomfortable in the beginning but then slowly find their places. Katniss seemed to be the more stronger character but Tris has definitely showed some personality traits that are very Dauntless like the name of her faction. Both books are very similar and so are the characters but their lifestyles are extremely different.

Katniss has had more trouble being the main control of her family. Her mom turned depressed and Katniss was subbed on. She has had to take care of her sister Prim because her mom is not physically and emotionally ready to take control again. Every morning Katniss has to cross District boundaries and go hunting to get her family food and supplies to keep alive. Katniss and her family has to deal with being in District 12 the poorest district, but in the end all of Katniss's work pays off and she is crowned victor of the Hunger Games.

On the other hand Tris has not had to face these casualties but now she has to face being Divergent. When a kid grows up they are forced to take a test to see what Faction you are placed into. If you do not get placed you are Faction listed which is basically a death list. Tris sneaks her way into Dauntless which consists of her most unlikely traits but she proves to be very brave. Tris seemed like the under dog to the people of Dauntless but she has proved them absolutely wrong.

Overall I respect both Katniss and Tris equally and think they both have amazing skills and courage and I think that these to books are both similar and great. Divergent and Hunger Games are mainly about struggle and finding yourself, which people have to do in real life.

The Fear Landscape

Matthew Scafuri
803

In Divergent by Veronica Roth, fear is on of the main components of being Dauntless. In the beginning of the story, Tris thought of the Dauntless as brave and fearless. As she joins with them, however, she sees that they aren't as brave as they show themselves to be. They really show her that not everyone can conquer fear, but that they can suppress fear and make it not effect them as much.

During Tris's fear landscape, there were only a few times that she actually faces her fear head on. At other times, she uses Divergent to break her fears. The fear landscape can only end if you calm down and find an inner place where you really are happy. Her actual fears vary greatly, from being kidnapped to drowning, but she still manages to calm down on each obstacle. One of her biggest fears was the crows. The crows would peck at her skin and attack her. Another fear was that she had a sun and was being forced to shoot and kill her mother and father. Even though she had more trouble getting to her happy place in this thought, she did.

Even though I may not have a 'Happy Place,' I have other ways of dealing with my anger. I type my thoughts and then read them back to myself to become calm. Tris may be put in a more serious situation, but sometimes when you are doing something it seems like it is more important then anything. Everyone gets mad, and a lot of people have different ways of dealing with them. Everyone needs to find their own happy place, whether it is writing things down to thinking about good things.

think about yourself every now and then

I am currently reading a book called Divergent by Veronica Roth. The main character Beatrice struggled to make one of the most important choices of her life. She has to make a choice between staying in her faction or going to another faction. But she decides to go to another faction and struggles to stay there. A line that really stuck me is what Caleb Beatrice's  brother says. "Beatrice we should think about our families. But. We must also think about ourselves." I think that family is important becauase like Caleb said we should also think about ourselves beacause we're also important.

Beatrice often struggles with being in the selflessness faction. She says when looked from an outsider's point of veiw it seems so beautiful but when actually living it it seems so difficult. Being in the selflessness faction is difficult. You never think of yourself only others. on the choosing day ceramony she either picks selfnessless or bravery. She chooses Bravery becuase she says she is too selfish. After 16 years of trying she isn't selfless enough. I think that is a good thing. Beatrice always has to thnk of others but can't of herself. That's sad because if you always think of others but never yourself you may end up destroying yourself.

This reminds of another book series called Fruits Basket. One of the main characters Tohru is a lot like the people of Abnegation or the selfless. Tohru is very Selfless and always puts the well being of others before herself. Her friends think she should think about self more often. I think People who are very selfless should put themselves first sometimes. What if you end learning something you shouldn't have and keep it from others for the sake of one person you may end up ruining yourself with worry. Often you may end up hurting yourself to help others. Your family and the people you care about are important but you must also think about yourself for you're also important and you have to think about your well being.

I have recently read Hunger Game's  by Suzanne Collins and Divergent by Veronica Roth. In these two books the protagonists Katniss and Beatrice can be compared very well to eachother. Katniss likes to be more independent and she doesn't depend on any friends except for gale. Still, Katniss is very independent and likes being a lone wolf. Beatrice on the other hand, likes to fit in and depends more on her peers. However, they are both somewhat similar because they both have to fight for their survival and at a very young age.

Not only are the characters different, but both stories in general are very different to me. In Hunger Games, Katniss and basically everyone else, especially in district 12, had to help support their families because family was one of the most important things to everybody. Your family was your survival because they helped support you. You had to make decisions that would influence your family. But in Divergent, your family was not as important as your  faction. It seems like you had to support your faction more than anything else.

It seems that Hunger Games and Katniss are more like-able than Beatrice and Divergent. Hunger Games has more of an emotional story. Katniss is more thoughtful and caring for her family. They way that Veronica Roth wrote Divergent makes it seem like she wasn't trying to make Beatrice too like-able. The way that Divergent is written, that a faction is more important than family, makes me not have as much sympothy for Beatrice as I have for Katniss.

Good Intentions

In the book Divergent everyone is separated into factions based on their life choices and strengths. People could transfer to where they think they will be the best they could. The factions had worked together to create a safe world with a perfect government, but the purpose has grown from that. In class we talked about how the factions may have turned into a competition, and how they strayed from their purpose. I think this is the case.

I think that, although they don't seem like competitors to each other, inside they each want to outdo the other. I think that is also part of why Jeanine was writing those things about Tris' dad. The Dauntless, I feel like, want to outdo the other factions in strength and toughness, even though that was why they were created. The factions lost sight of what their purpose originally was, and they got caught up in the competition.

Also, in Dauntless, and all the other factions, there are initiations to see who could become part of that faction. I'm not sure if the other initiations result in some people becoming factionless, but the Dauntless initiation does. I think that the initiations started to change along with the faction's goals, and I think that the initiations started to mirror the factions. The Dauntless are very rigid, and their initiation doesn't leave much room for slackers. I agree with Tris when she was talking about the Dauntless manifesto on page 206. Tris talks about how Dauntless might have started out with good intentions, but got sidetracked along the way.

Doomed for More...

I (since 7th grade) have been attempting to understand the Sci-Fi genre. I read several basic stories written recently (most of which I advise you to never ever read) as well as some classics, Ray Bradbury, H.G Wells, George Orwell etc. In comparison, recently written books have a particularly simple story algorithm. Most of these recent books have a teenage main character, mostly female. They all live in a world similar to ours, only one simple thing is the focus of the world.

In the Hunger Games, that thing is Entertainment. In the world of Divergent, that thing is fitting in. As in both series, someone fits in too much, or entertainment is taken too far, that creates our conflict. So far in Divergent, Al just killed himself and Tris being Divergent makes her able to control her mental fear facing, as well as realize that what is happening to her is not real. Being "divergent" seems a bit odd to me, if I was a government, trying to force people into predetermined 'factions' I wouldn't make their even be a word for being different or special, because that is counter-productive.

Love is also theme in both books. This isn't particularly one of my favorite themes, but it isn't just a teen drama addition. Even in books such as 1984, love was a contributing factor to the character's sanity. In the Hunger Games love is hope, something so innocent it stops a room-full of battle planners from killing Katniss and Peeta. However, in Divergent love seems to be a coping mechanism for Tris. She loves four mainly because, so much is going on in her life and she doesn't know what to do.

So, yeah. I tried get as much down on paper as possible, and succeeded. Now for the title of this piece, I opened the cover of divergent and looked inside... http://veronicarothbooks.blogspot.com/p/books.html

Thanks for reading! I had a lot of ideas from brainstorming in class.

Do you think Al's death was Tris's fault???

Celebrating the variety of personality traits- Divergent

In the book Divergent, the world is divided into different factions. Each factions represent different personality traits that that faction in particular values and sees as essential. Candor is the honest, Erudite is the intelligent, Amity is the peaceful, Dauntless is the brave, Abnegation is the selflessness. The protagonist, Beatrice, belongs to Abnegation but struggles with being devoted to only one trait.

I think that there is a large problem with how the government is run. These factions each have very important values that people need to have. These factions are not friendly with each other though some more than others. If the factions are divided up like this, people will be very strong in one trait more than another. Each of these traits are very important and should be upheld. If the factions were eliminated, all of these traits could be taught equally. The people would have a well rounded personality rather than strong in honesty and lacking in selflessness. Or being peaceful but lacking bravery.

Another problem with the way the government is run is that it is difficult, especially for younger children, to decide which value they want to devote themselves to. Some people may not even know what bravery or peacefulness is. They cannot make up their mind for the way they want to live at such a young age. The thing that is most dreaded is being factionless. This means that you do not have a faction and that you are treated with less respect. The factionless usually clean streets and public areas. I can connect this to when slavery was legal in the United States. Slaves worked for their slave owners and were treated in an inhumane manner. I even see that in today's society, people who are homeless or are begging for money are often ignored and looked down upon. I believe it will take generations and generations before people will come together as one and not belittle others for the amount of money they have.

Hunger games !!!

Page 142 "I want to die as myself." - Peeta

The hunger games book is amazing. The hunger games by Suzanne Collins has a very short but deep quote. Before going into the hunger games Peeta says, "I want to die as myself." when he says he wants to die as himself he means he wants to be himself when he dies and not be a piece of the Capitols games. The Capitol doesn't see the kids as people but as entertainment. I think this quote sums up the entire hunger games trilogy. I think that everybody should want to die the selves. But the thing is whatever you die as or who ever you die as, you will be seen as that by society. Hence in the games everybody will be watching.

Districts are to Factions as People are to Animals

Question: How are Katniss and Beatrice similar and different?

In class, I am currently reading the book, Divergent, by Veronica Roth. This book is about a girl named Beatrice who is a 16 year old who changed factions from a faction that values selflessness to a faction valuing bravery and courage. Now she is struggling to survive in this dangerous faction and she is struggling to hide her true identity from her new faction. Beatrice's situation is similar to what Katniss's situation is. Katniss was a poor older sister who sacrified herself in the place of her 12 year old sister to fight and kill 10 people in an abandoned piece of land far away from their home. Katniss is also  struggling to survive and struggling to put on a show for the crowd. Katniss and Beatrice are similar and different in many ways.

The two strong-willed women protagonists are similar because they are fighting to be normal. Beatrice is fighting through each trial of initiation for becoming Dauntless so she can calm down and not have to watch her back. She's fighting for a spot in the Dauntless. She's trying to be better than them all to be ranked to the top, no matter how dangerous that is with Peter, her biggest competitor. Katniss is fighting to be alive and to fulfill her promise to her sister Prim. Both girls are fighting for what they believe in.

The two are different because they are surrounded by different societies. Katniss's society is based off of how rich or poor you are and what your district's main occupation is. For example, Katniss lives in district 12 and the poorest part of her district. District 12's main occupation is being a coal miner because they are known for their mines. Another example is Rue's district which is district 8. Rue also lives in the poorer part of the district and their main occupation is a farmer and/or a person who takes care of the crops because they are know for their fine land and soil. Beatrice's society is based off of their personality traits. Beatrice originated and was born from the Abnegation faction and she switched factions because she felt as if she didn't belong there. The Abnegation faction values selflessness. The Amity faction values kindness and is understanding. The Candor faction values honesty. The Erudite faction values intelligence and knowledge. The Dauntless faction values bravery and courage. The people in Beatrice's society are divided literally into these 5 factions for old time reasons sake, and it has been their way of life ever since. Another reason the two girls are different is because of their cruel intentions. Katniss is trying to break the capitol. She continuously tries to manipulate the capitol and their ways so she can break society. She doesn't like being controlled like a puppet by the capitol and she feels that she may be the only person who will ever try and attempt to put a stop to the madness occurring. Beatrice is trying to fit into the society. She wants to be like the Dauntless for initiation so she can finally become a Dauntless and absorb their ways. She does things that wouldn't ever be allowed in the Abnegation and she changes herself completely to be another Dauntless in the crowd. She wants to be unnoticed so she can just fit right in. With the Dauntless, you get noticed if you are either EXTREMELY courageous or you are EXTREMELY weak and terrified of every little thing. Unfortunately for Beatrice, she went from being at the very bottom to the very top so she was definitely noticed throughout initiation.

I think that Katniss and Beatrice(or Tris) are working toward being a protector. They protect everyone everywhere they go. Katniss in the book, Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, protected her sister Prim by competing in her place in the games. She protected Rue from the short amount of time that she was alive from the other players in the games. She also protected Peeta when she had to work with him to win and to stay alive. Beatrice protected Al when she took his place for having knives thrown at her. She protected Christina when Four was about to tell her off. She also protected her family by keeping her 'Divergent' secret to herself and Tori. Katniss and Beatrice thrive for the same goals but at the end of the day, they are their own person and that's all they ever wanted to be.

How are katiniss and Beatrice similar and different !!!

How are Katniss, from The Hunger Games, and Beatrice, from Divergent, both similar and different?

The characters, Katniss from the Hunger Games and Beatrice from Divergent are both similar in many ways but also have some differences in their personalities. They're similar because they're both headstrong in their thinking and bold in what they do. They're also different because Katniss likes to be in solitude and stand out in a crowd but Beatrice likes to fit in and be social. Many aspects of their personalities that show these similiarities and differences.
One way that Katniss and Tris are similar is how they both are strong- willed in temperment. For example, when Katniss is fighting in the Hunger Games she never lets anything get her down, like when her friend Rue was killed right in front of her. One way that Katniss and Tris are similar is how they both are strong-brave girls who would fight for anything. One way that Katniss and Tris are similar is how they both are strong- willed in temperment. For example, when Katniss is fighting in the Hunger Games she never lets anything get her down, like when her friend Rue was killed right in front of her. Beatrice is strong and brave because she was determined to be able to do what the other Dauntless initiates were able to do.
And also these 2 girls are very different , in their own way. Katniss from the hunger games because Katniss likes to be alone and stand out. is always around her friends or around Tobias (Four) and bad things seem to come her way when she's alone; like the time she was attacked by the 4 Candor transfers when she wasn't with her friends.

This message relates to many teenagers in the real world because they have secrets about them selves or anyone else
The book Divergent by Veronica Roth is about a girl named Beatrice who has to be placed into a choice of 5 different factions.  Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Candor and Amity.  Tris was born in the faction Abnegation, she eventually transferred to Dauntless and must face the fact that she is divergent.  When she arrives in her new faction, she opted for a change of name to go by, using Tris as a nickname for Beatrice, hoping for a fresh start in a new faction.  Tris has to take a test in the beginning of the book this decides what faction she will be placed in.

Tris has to face the fact that she is Divergent which does not happen to many kids.  Tris has to transfer to Dauntless which was not necessarily her favorite pick.  Recently in the story Tris has showed a lot of Dauntless traits which is very shocking.  On page 158 there was a knife throwing contest where the kids had to throw knifes at the target.  The head master made one kid Al stand in front of the target.  Tris volunteered to stand in front which is definitely a Dauntless characteristic.  Tris is slowly fitting in with her Faction mates.

This has never happened to me but I imagine switching faction is kind of like switching schools in a way.  I have known some kids that have some personal issues that ended up in switching schools.  Schools can have different feelings and they can run differently.  So it can be hard to adapt to a new school because you may not fit in with the method or the people there.  I think that what Tris is going through, happens to many other kids in real life and can be disastrous.

Overall Divergent is a great book and I really enjoy watching Tris grow as a Dauntless member and as a purpose, there is lots of drama and tension.  Divergent is turning out to be a great book and I am really enjoying reading it.

The Hunger Games and Divergent Similarities and Differences

The characters, Katniss from the Hunger Games and Beatrice from Divergent are both similar in many ways but also have some differences in their personalities.  They're similar because they're both headstrong in their thinking and bold in what they do. They're also different because Katniss likes to be in solitude and stand out in a crowd but Beatrice (Tris for short) likes to fit in and be social. Many aspects of their personalities that show these similiarities and differences.
One way that Katniss and Tris are similar is how they both are strong- willed in temperment. For example, when Katniss is fighting in the Hunger Games she never lets anything get her down, like when her friend Rue was killed right in front of her. Tris is strong- willed because she was determined to be able to do what the other Dauntless initiates were able to do, such as fight well and be able to overcome the mental tests they had to go through.  Another way Katniss and Tris are similar is how bold they are. Katniss is bold because when she was preforming her skills for the Gamemakers they were rudely ignoring her because of the feast in front of them. So, she took one of her arrows and shot it through the apple in the mouth of a pig the Gamemakers were about to eat. Some may call this impulsive, I thought of it as bold and standing up for herself. One way that shows Tris she is bold is when she was the "first jumper" which is the first person to jump off the roof of the Dauntless compound to prove that they have the no fear mindset. Being the first jumper proves Tris's boldness because when someone is the first jumper they are considered the bravest because they jumped before they could see what was actually at the bottom. These are just a few ways that Tris and Katniss are similar.
However, Tris and Katniss are also very different in certain ways. For example, Katniss is different that Tris because Katniss likes to be alone and stand out. Katniss preferred not to form an alliance during the Hunger Games because she felt more comfortable alone. Tris, on the other hand, is always around her friends or around Tobias (Four) and bad things seem to come her way when she's alone; like the time she was attacked by the 4 Candor transfers when she wasn't with her friends. Another way that Katniss and Tris are different is because Katniss wants to stand out and Tris wants to fit in. To Katniss, the Hunger Games were all about standing out so you could get more sponsors and have a better chance at survival. Katniss was extremely excited when she scored the highest rank when she preformed for the Gamemakers and that she stood out above all other contestants. Tris, however, is all about fitting in. For example, when Tris came in first place during the Mental Tests of the Dauntless, she said that "a wave of dread came over me." Also, when Tris's mother came to visit her on Visiting Day, her mother told her to stay in the middle of the pack and to not come in first and stand out; in fear of her daughter's life.  Fitting in is important to Tris because if she stands out and people find out that she's Divergent, bad things can happen to her; such as her being killed at the hands of the Dauntless leaders. These are  just a few ways that Tris and Katniss are different.
In conclusion, both Katniss and Tris have their similarities and differences, and that makes it fun to read the stories of their adventures. The books would be boring to read if Katniss and Tris had the same character traits. All in all, Tris and Katniss are both great characters that are interesting to follow.

Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth is what I am still currently reading. At age sixteen, everyone chooses which faction they want to be. Meaning which trait will they live by. There are the Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite. The protagonist, Beatrice had a choice to choose between a piece of cheese and a knife. She ends up picking neither. After that test, she is told she is a Divergent. So she choose to be from Abnegation to Dauntless. The Dauntless are strong and bold, also they have no fear to fight their problems. She has an internal conflict, but there is an external conflict too.

The internal conflict is that Beatrice sometimes thinks that she can't be Dauntless because in the book, there are all these tests given to her and other people and they are too much to handle. Sometimes she cries because of what is happening to her. But that leads to the external conflict. The external conflict is that many of the people training to be Dauntless are suffering too! They don't want to fight and hurt each other. In my opinion, hurting each other is wrong. Even if it is just practice, it isn't right to hurt the ones that...didn't do anything wrong. The difference between the internal and external conflict is that Beatrice's individual conflict is that she thinks that she won't be able to succeed. But in the book, there are times she acted courageous like when she defended Al when he was "practicing" not to flinch when a knife is thrown at him. The external conflict affects everyone's emotions. Everyone else has separate emotions when it comes to all this Dauntless training.

I don't agree with how the conflicts are being handled. First, I don't agree with the Dauntless training because it proves that hurting people is okay. But Dauntless means over-coming cowardice by becoming bold and courageous. Nothing to do with fighting and hurting people just for practice. Also, crying about it is okay, I guess. But doing it in front of Four isn't! That is because Four is serious about being dauntless. Then suddenly Beatrice is crying when he is around!

In conclusion, the conflicts can really make you feel lucky to not have this stuff going on in your world. Maybe the conflicts will resolve when I finish the book!
Prompt: How are Katniss, from The Hunger Games, and Beatrice, from Divergent, both similar and different?

Ela/Ms.Robbins

The two female protagonists Katniss and Beatrice are very simlar but are very unique as well. Katniss is a female protaonist from the book The Hunger Games, by suzanne collins about how Katniss goes to fight for her life in the violent Hunger Games of the once United States, Panem. Beatrice, known as Tris in the majority of the book, is the female protagonist from the book Divergent about another future United states where she is the odd one out of the bunch and her differences make her life dangerous. Both girls face problems and go about them in similar ways but, as stated before, they are still have unique personalities.

These two female protagonists are similar because they both take risks, are brave, and they both do what they can for the people they love. They put other people first. For example, Katniss Everdeen takes the place of her sister in the Hunger Games. This is both an act of kindness and bravery. She is brave enough to not think about what might happen to her entering into the Hunger Games but that she doesn't want her sister to get hurt or die. she doesn't care if she's risking her life because she loves her sister so much. Beatrice, in the beginning of the book, is a member of the Abnegation faction. This faction values selflessness and they always think of other people before themselves. Even having fun is too self involved for them. An example of how Beatrice is brave is that she switches factions instead of staying loyal to her born faction. This is a huge risk because many factions get very upset when one of their original members switches factions at the choosing ceremony. It is looked down upon. Overall, these girls have strong characteristics and they are both very similar.

These two female protagonists, though very similar, are also very different. One way they are different is that Katniss is brave throughout the entire story. You see her act brave in the beginning when she trespasses unguarded territory to hunt foe her family, al the way to the end of the story where she breaks the rules of the Hunger Games. Throughout the entire story Katniss stays true to hersled. She might grow as a person but she doesn't totally change who she is. Beatrice, on the other hand, starts out as a girl who comes from a faction that is very proper and not self involved at all. From there she goes to a faction that values bravery and taking risks. She, as a person, drastically changes. She and Katniss are very different that way.

Overall, although these two strong and powerful female protagonists are very similar in wany ways, they are both individuals. No two people are the same. It's interesting how The Hunger Games and Divergent are both dystopian fiction books about future United States and the two main characters are very similar. Maybe the authors of these kind of books feel that there needs to be a strong ad brave main character? I wonder if these similarities were a coincidence or not? I would like to read more of these kinds of books to see if the similarities are still there.

Dysfunctional Factions

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, the city is split into factions. They are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The factions are supposed to be an ideal and functional way of organizing the city, but they end up causing tension and splitting up families.

The way of splitting the city up into factions has divided the city, built tension, and splits up families. In the Faction History Textbook, one of the more prominent rules is "Faction before blood." This rule is definitely a source of much of the tension between the factions. When a child chooses to switch factions, tensions build between families and children. This severs important relationships within families.

On page 180, it says "the Erudite have prohibited Abnegation visitors from entering their compound." This is a demonstration of how having different factions splits people apart. Erudite turned on Abnegation because they were so drastically different from Erudite. They are so separated that Erudite hates Abnegation for hoarding supplies that are just a rumor. The problem is that these factions are so divided and don't communicate enough that rumor can easily be taken for truth and develop a hateful relationship between the factions.

My thesis connects to humanity because people are always divided by an infinite number of factors and it is easy to have miscommunications and be separated by differences. This is why it is very important to understand people who are different from us.

In conclusion, the factions in Divergent divide people more than they help people coexist and have a functional society. This is why understanding and communication is important in any society.

What other problems do you see in the structure of the society in Divergent?

Reading response

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, Beatrice had to make a choice to either transfer or stay in the same faction. She finds out that during the Test she proved to be of any faction other then the ones she didn't qualify to. She can't tell anyone she's Divergent because it would lead to death. The author wants the reader to know that keeping a secret can be a dangerous thing. Beatrice also know as Tris has been suspected of being divergent, she was suspected because she did stuff that didn't correspond to her first faction which was Abnegation. He didn't follow all the rules because she wouldn't think of helping without wing told or reminded. As she was about to get discovered her partners from dauntless assaulted her because try suspected something different about her. This shows how keeping a secret can be very dangerous.

When the protagonist is assaulted it reveals how keeping that secret would lead to death if anyone would find out. Four witnessed Tris break the glass during the simulation, "Your divergent..." "What's divergent?" Tris responded. She tries to find away on making sure that no one would find out what she was. During the test she was told not to tell anyone. Keeping that secret can lead to the deaths of her loved ones and even to herself. When Tris says that she doesn't know what divergent is she has to be calm and not show cowardice. By showing cowardice she's not able to be dauntless.
People have to keep secrets to stop rebellion or hatred or sometime death from happening. Serious secrets are more of an impact of Simeon finds out the truth. This happened in our society as well, in our society we have people who make up conspiracies on what our government met be lying to u about.

This message relates to many teenagers in the real world because they have secrets about them selves or anyone else. By telling the secret to someone else or someone over hearing that secret it could lead to hatred towards each other. A quote is, " And the truth will set you free" most people would take the truth in a hurtful way. Our government knows stuff we don't know and won't tell us because our response may be rebellion. If the government were to say that the world were to end tomorrow everyone would go in rebellion and many deaths would accrue. By keeping a secret people may die depending on the type of secret they heard. That's why keeping a secret can lead to harm and rebellion against you and the person. Therefore Tris has to keep her being divergent a secret for the risk of her life.

The Hardest Choice You Will Ever Make. Choosing A Faction (Blog Post 2: Divergent)

Choosing a faction is one of the hardest choices you will ever make. That once choice that you choose will choose your future and how you live for the rest of your life. It controls your friends and family and determines whether you will stay with them or leave them.

To be in Abnegation would be to show total  selflesness. To be in Dauntless would be to show extreme bravery with no cowardice. To be in Amity would to show no aggression. To be in Candor would be to have complete honesty. Erudite would be to be to always  be searching for knowledge and awnswers.

Now imagine having to choose one of these factions. It might be easy if you think about it real  quick. Until you actually think about it. That one choice, made at the choosing ceremony at age 16, determines your entire rest of your life. If your entire family is in one faction, wouldn't you want to be in the same faction as your faction? What if you didn't feel like you fit in with thhat faction. What if you were in Dauntless, but you were a total coward and didn't like to fight. (Not calling anyone a coward O.o) At the choosing ceremony when you were looking back and forth between the two factions that were totally opposite from each other, which one would you choose? Amity, where you kight feel like you fit in, or Dauntless, were you feel like an outcast and not as brave as all the other Dauntless. The smart thing to do would pobably to choosethe faction you feel like you feel you fit in because if you choose the one you don't fit into and the initiations come you may fail and become factionless.

If your family was in one faction, but you couldn't fit into that faction, whch faction would you choose to be in for The Rest of your life. Wouldn't that be a hard choice?

You have to choose which faction you want to be in, and you have to choose within a couple of days. You would have to think quickly. If you don't choose wisely then you may bee unhappy for the rest of your life and possibly end up factionless.

Now which one would you choose? Abnegation? Dauntless? Candor? Erudite? Amity? Think about what you would choose to be in for the rest of your life. Choose your strongest trait and that would probably be the faction you end up in.

Divergent

The boook divergant by Verionca Roth, is about kids that are put into 5 differnet factions based on thier different persoanliltys And different character traits. Beatrice thee protagonist of this story to me is brave. Beatrice first faction she lived in was called abenegation. Abnegation people usually care for others more then their actual self. So in the choosing cerormony she has to move on and choose a new faction. She cant take her brother or family with her so its a tough choice. Me, i wouldn't be feeling so good about my self. I cant leave my family behind, thats a tough decsion that I cant make. This is one reason why I believe Beatrice is brave. Another reason why I believe Beatrice is brave is because she choose a dauntless dealing with security. In this faction the members fight each other, learn how to shoot guns etc. I would have never thought a girl would be comitied to these requirements. But Beatrice did! That's another reason why I feel Beatrice is brave. In conclusion this made me think deeper about humanity. Like I would have never thought that in some world teenagers are taken away from home to join a group based your personality. It makes me think can places like this really exist? All, in all this is a huge reason why this book makes me think deeper about humanity.

Divergent

In the past weeks I have been reading the book Divergent. The book is focused in on Beatrice. Once you turn 16 you have to take a test to see what faction you belong to. You can go to Abnegation, Eritude, amity, Dauntless or Candor. Beatrice chooses to transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless. She then meets an instructor named four who helps her through initiation. However I think that Four is an interesting character. I believe that he is a complex character and that he is originally from the faction abnegation.

There were parts in the story that hinted that Four might be from abnegation. Near the beginning of the book there was a part of a paragraph that said, “two years ago Marcus’s son, Tobias, left us for Dauntless, and Marcus was devastated.” This could be Four because you can transfer factions when you are 16 and that was 2 years ago and now Four is 18. Also Tobias transferred to Dauntless which is where Four is, and since you don’t keep your name when you transfer he could have changed it to Four. While Four is talking to Tris after Al killed himself he said “we just have to let the guilt remind us to do better next time.” Tris then mentions that it is a lesson that Abnegation learn which is supposed to mean that guilt is a tool not a weapon. In order for Four to have known that he would have had to grown up in abnegation and then transfer. One last piece of evidence is that Four never wants to share his background. He always says that it does not matter where he came from, it only matters that he is in dauntless now. He is trying to hide from the Faction he came from.

This can connect to the real world to teenagers or people in general. A lot of people don’t want to share their past. I think that the author is using four as an example on why you don’t always need to share your past. She might also be trying to say that you don’t need to know someone’s past and what matters is the present and the future. She might be saying you should judge people on their past because of what they did you should judge them on what they are doing.

What It Means To Be Dauntless

Matthew Scafuri

Everyone is different. People have different thoughts, values, and ideas. Thats why in "Divergent"By Veronica Roth, there are the different factions. Out of Amity, Erudite, Dauntless, Candor, and Abnegation, being in Candor and Dauntless you need the most trust because trust is the only way people will respect you. For example, in Abnegation, all you really need to do is be more respectful to others then to yourself, then in Dauntless if you let your guard down someone might kill you.

In Candor, everyone must tell the truth. Candor runs the government, and therefor must be trusted. I think that it is good to have a whole faction devoted to loyalty and trust because not everyone is loyal and you cant trust everyone, so why not put all the main  truth tellers in one group?

In Dauntless, almost everyone is trying to kill or injure someone else. Peter killing Edward, Al and Peter trying to kill Tris, so you always need to have someone on your side. Tris has Christina, on again off again Four, and a few others at her side. She trusts these people more then others because they stood up for her and tried to protect her.

In real life, trust is important too. People wont just let you do things or give you things if they dont trust you. For example, My friend the other day let me hold his wallet as he ran. If I was just a stranger, He would think I may run off the wallet and take his money. He trusted me enough to do that. This may not be as serious as someone trying to kill me, but it is still an important act of trust.

Divergent

Over the last two weeks, i have been reading the book Divergent. It is about a girl named Beatrice and she has to take a test because she is 16 now. The test is about the faction that you have to choose. there is selflessness, amity, and etc. In the paragraph below I will talk about the conflict in the story.

Even though there was many conflicts, the biggest conflict so far was the test. Beatrice was so nervous about what faction she would get. She had a choice to pick a knife or a piece of chees and she didn't pick anything. A giant dog came out and it was angry. It would have been so much easier to stop it with one of those items. This part was a conflict in the book.

This book related to real world because you have to choose groups in real life. In school there's an athletic group, a nerdy group and etc. People have to pick what the y want to do with their life. When people work they have to be honest, when people play sports the have to be brave and fight. Some things in the real world. This book lso relates to the Hunger Games because at a certain age they have to put their name in at least once. All of these things relate to the real world.

Divergent

I am currently reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. Its about how when you are sixteen years old, everyone must chooses which faction they want to be which could change anybody hearts even when you don't know it. The faction picking is all about which trait will they live in and by. There are 5 faction the Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite. She then meets an instructor named four who helps her through initiation. However I think that Four is an interesting character. I believe that he is a complex character and that he is originally from the faction abnegation.
There were parts in the story where the author showed the reader that four was from abnegation. almost in the beggining of the book. in one part of the book in  a paragraph the author said “two years ago Marcus’s son, Tobias, left us for Dauntless, and Marcus was devastated.” This sow that it was four because you must changed factions when you are 16 and that was 2 years ago and now Four is 18. Also Tobias changed to Dauntless which is where Four is, and since you don’t keep your name when you change faction he could have changed it to Four i suspect something.

While Four is talking to Tris after Al killed himself he said “we just have to let the guilt remind us to do better next time.” Tris then mentions that it is a lesson that Abnegation learn which is supposed to mean that guilt is a object not a gun. For Four to have known that he would have had to grown up in abnegation and then changed to a different faction.

One last piece of evidence is that Four never wants to share his history about him. He always says that it does not matter where he came from, it only matters that he is in dauntless now. He is trying to hide from the Faction he came from. He is probably scared of revealing his true identy

i think this connects to teenagers or humans in general. A lot of people don’t want to share their past or tell any information to anybody. I think that the author is using four as an example on why you don’t always need to share your past maybe it will be good to keep your mouth shut most of the time. She might also be trying to say that you don’t need to know someone’s past and what matters is the present and the future. She might be saying you shouldn't judge people on their past. Don't judge at all. Just to enjoy life

People of The Capital (Hunger Games Post 1 Prompt 2)

"Everything is about them, not the dying boys and girls in the arena"
(pg 354)

The people they are talking about are the people of the Capital. The dying girls and boys in the arena are the tributes from each district. That shows how the people of the capital only care about them selves. After the district war, they forced the districts into the competing for survival in the hunger games. The capital watches the hunger games as if they are a sport, but from a different perspective of a tribute. It is a death sentence.

They love to watch the tributes slowly murder each other until there is only one person left. If the fight would get to boring they would probably be say,"Eh, not enough violence. Let's just kill somebody." That shows how cruel they are to the districts. They only care about them selves, as they watch others suffer. If the district you elong to didn't put up a good show and not win, not only would their tributes probably die. They would have to suffer another year of poverty.

As the capital living in luxury happily watching the sick game they call the hunger games, districts like district 12 are starving, fighting for their food, and sending two tributes to be send to be slaughtered in the games.

This book hints to how the world sort of is now. It's not as cruel as the capital to the districts. People in the real world aren't sending people to play games that will end their life, and that's their way of controlling them. The world is the same as in the book when you think of the people and children living in poverty. While other have huge meals every night and are totally wealthy.

Also, in previous lessons in class we learned about child soldiers and how they are being forcefully recruited and sent into battle. How they lose their childhood. Isn't that similar to the book in a way? When you think of the child soldiers as the tributes it is very similar. Not too long ago people didn't know that was going on. Some people did. Now many people know about it. There isn't enough being done about it. Could the Capital be compared to America when you think about it? People just sit by as children die. "Everything is about them, not the dying boys and girls in the arena" (354)

Sorry for this post being late. =)

Dystopian Blog Post 1 (prompt 2)

Dystopian Blog Post 1 (prompt 2)

"Who cares? It's all a big show. It's how you're perceived." (Haymitch, 135)

The hunger games, are really just an abusive use of power. One population's entertainment is another's destruction. To the capitol, the hunger games are the same as a reality show. People get in fights, tables get broken. Tributes are tables.

This quote talks about how Peeta and Katniss being (fake) lovers isn't important, even though it ends up being very important. If they weren't pretending to be lovers, this book would have had a very different ending. Most likely, Katniss would be picked off early in the games. I believe this because she wouldn't get a high score, because she wouldn't be as angry at the gamemakers for not paying attention, and wouldn't impress them as she does in the actual story. In the beginning, Katniss had little supplies and the only thing that kept her alive was the other tributes fear because of her high score. So in actuality, the way she is being 'perceived' as star-crossed lovers, is the main thing keeping her alive. Also if she and Peeta weren't pretending to be together, they wouldn't rebel in the end of the games.

"Whoever puts together the highlights has to choose what sort of story to tell." (Katniss, 362).

This quote talks about how much of a 'story' the games its, not a war. This games, the story was about an unfair battle about two people that 'love' each other, resorting to suicidal actions, to stay together. In all, the hunger games isn't about what really happens, it's about the story, and how the characters react to each other. Finding a love story in a blood bath, sounds like a reality T.V

Sorry this wasn't posted until the morning, my email was messed up, and I had fix everything in zero period.

Hunger games

The hunger games by Suzanne Collins is a Great dystopian fiction book to read. It shows you how people can say our world isn't perfect, but how it can also be worst in other world. The protagonist Katniss and Peta (her partner from district 12) go threw a rough battle but come out on top. The purpose of the hunger games is for that person that wins family to get money and food and other things. Mainly food and money. There are 11 other districts as well but of course only one can win.

In the beginning of the story their is a ceremony to choose which kids will represent their District  in the annul hunger games. Katniss and Peta were  both choose to represent district 12. And they went on a won but their was a rough road ahead. Peta's family had owned a bred store or bakery, so they had more money then Katniss family did but he was still chosen. It was clearly not that hard to tell the government didn't care about the kids one bit. To me I don't even consider it an organized government even though it is. As hard as it is to just see them let so many kids lose there life in a game every year shows they don't care about the people in the world expect their selfs. Even though like I said our world Isn't perfect. It's way , way far from perfect but it isnt such a horrible place like that world that just lets the youth go out an kill one another. Even do of course it's for food and money which we can take into Consideration but it isn't worth all the death and violence that is needed. Just think about the parents. They don't know if they are ever gonna see their kid again after they are chosen at that ceremony. All, in all I feel like comparing and contrasting our world to their world is important to see the difference.

In conclusion now you can clearly tell the difference between our world and a Dystopian world. Compared to them we don't have it really hard and tough compared to them. I feel like this is a good book to read to tell a difference in two completely Different world. Overall it was a great, but interesting read.

Not losing yourself

In the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Peeta says, "I want to die as myself." When he says this it was very interesting to me. I tried to think and figure out what he meant. I thought that Peeta was saying that when the end up going to the arena and fight in the games, they change. They change into these killing monsters who have no mercy and want to kill everyone in their way to victory, no matter who it is or how old they are. I think that that is exactly what the capitol wants too. They want them to become these blood thirsty killing machines because it puts on a good show that entertains them. Thats what Peeta doesn't want. He doesn't want to go down as another one of the capitol's game pieces in the games. He doesn't want to lose himself in the arena, just for the capitol's entertainment.

In real life when some people become famous, they let all the money and the fame get to their heads. They lose themselves completely and they end up not being the person that they once were. Some of these famous people become complete trainwrecks because all the money and fame gets to them. They change so much that even their mother's and family start to question if they're really related. This happens because once money and fame get into the picture, then they just change. They become the opposite of what they once were and they become known as someone that they're really not. Like when some celebrites breakdown and become out of control, they become known as a crazy celebrity that did something weird. Like a celebrity can be the world's best singer, but if they do something dumb or something crazy then people forgot their talent and all the other amazing things that they can do and just remember then for a mistake that they made. Like for example Lindsay Lohan. When I think of her I think of her as a person who went to rehab and was in drugs and stuff, and thats also how a lot of people see her as. But before, people used to think of her as a really amazing actor but that all changed when she changed and got into the drugs and alcohol. Another example is Amy whinehouse. Early in her career everyone knew her as a good singer with a really good voice. But later in her career and when she died, people thought of her for being a drug addict who overdosed and that's because thats the image she gave herself. Thats the image that her fans and the people saw. Just another drug addict.

That's what peeta doesn't want. He doesn't want people to know him as the person who killed this little boy in the arena or some girl in the arena. No, he wants them to remember him as being Peeta Mellark. Not a capitol game piece who turned into a cold hearted killer for his survival. He wanted to be known and remembered as Petta Mellark. The born his mom raised him to be and the boy that his friends and family knew him as.

I want to die as myself

I think this quote sums up the trilogy because the simple idea of rebellion. All three book s have rebellion in it. Technically you are rebelling if you want to die as yourself in panem. People want you to die for the entertainment. If you do not entertain them and rebel against what the people want and what the Capitol wants, he'll would break loose.

I also think that you should want to die yourself because why would you want to die something you're not. You should be yourself your whole life and no one could change that unless you let them. And Peeta, when he says the quote he is saying that he won't let them kill him as nothing but a piece in their games.

The only messed up thing about our society is that people will believe anything that they see. Including on t.v which is why Suzanne Collins added the fact that when they say star crossed lovers its really something that is made up but the Capitol and the audience everywhere will see it and believe it. So if you want people to see who you really, you should want to die yourself, too.
