is being different bad?

So far in the book Tori tells Beatrice that being divergent is dangerous as her brother was divergent and his faction found out about that. He was thrown into the chasm and they said it was sucide. But Tori knew her brother so she immediately knew they killed him. Also Beatrice overheard someone talking about finding all the Divergent rebels. I think that being different is not a bad thing. It's can be a good thing.
all the faction symbols. abnegation, candor, amity, erudite, and dauntless.

In Beatrice's world being different from any of the factions was dangerous. But why is that? It's because they pose a threat to their "perfect" world. People who are divergent can manipulate the stimulations they sometimes give them. During the second part of training Beatrice was in the stimulation for 3 minutes. Accoeding to Four that's 3 times faster than the other initiates. Four warned her to control her seflessness impulses.

In the the world people are scared of those who are different from them. They don't try to get rid of them but they talk about them and ignore them. And that causes a lot of emotinal damge. What I don't get is why are people afraid of those who are different? What's so bad about them? I think that people are wired to be afraid of thosse who are different.
