The Hunger Games- prompt two

I am writing about the quote " Who cares? It's all a big show. It's about how you're perceived."-Haymitch. This quote really made me think deeply on the whole point of the hunger games. After some thinking, I realized, there is no point! As Haymitch said, it's all a big show. All that the audience cares about is the charm that you carry and the clothes that you are assigned. The whole idea of the hunger games is so morbid but the audience is just treating it like it's a popularity contest. Here these children are, who have been plucked from their homes to participate in this deadly activity, and the people of the capitol are focusing on such artificial aspects.

In the book, Haymitch tells Katniss that she does not have an ounce of charm on her. Initially, this made Katniss irate but she realizes that Haymitch is only trying to help her. If she does not come off as amiable and ostentatious then people will be bored. They want to route and sponsor the most exciting tribute there is. And in the harsh future, sponsors may be the only thing that will keep Katniss alive. She has to put on a fake, artificial act, but in the long run it may help her through these harsh games.

At first I was confused. Does the capitol know that the tributes are putting on an act? Or are they so oblivious that they think the tributes are actually glad to be participating in the Hunger Games? I came to a conclusion that this time of year is so exciting to the capitol, that they just want to see a spectacular show. It's almost like the Super Bowl. People don't really care if someone gets hurt, they just want the game to be able to go on. The Hunger Games seems like a sporting event. They just want to see a show. If the tributes are banal and modest, no one will be able to stay awake. Haymitch is trying to tell Katniss that if she does not come off as ostentatious, then she may not get the sponsors she needs.
