The Hunger Games and Divergent Similarities and Differences

     The characters, Katniss from the Hunger Games and Beatrice from Divergent are both similar in many ways but also have some differences in their personalities.  They're similar because they're both headstrong in their thinking and bold in what they do. They're also different because Katniss likes to be in solitude and stand out in a crowd but Beatrice (Tris for short) likes to fit in and be social. Many aspects of their personalities that show these similiarities and differences.
     One way that Katniss and Tris are similar is how they both are strong- willed in temperment. For example, when Katniss is fighting in the Hunger Games she never lets anything get her down, like when her friend Rue was killed right in front of her. Tris is strong- willed because she was determined to be able to do what the other Dauntless initiates were able to do, such as fight well and be able to overcome the mental tests they had to go through.  Another way Katniss and Tris are similar is how bold they are. Katniss is bold because when she was preforming her skills for the Gamemakers they were rudely ignoring her because of the feast in front of them. So, she took one of her arrows and shot it through the apple in the mouth of a pig the Gamemakers were about to eat. Some may call this impulsive, I thought of it as bold and standing up for herself. One way that shows Tris she is bold is when she was the "first jumper" which is the first person to jump off the roof of the Dauntless compound to prove that they have the no fear mindset. Being the first jumper proves Tris's boldness because when someone is the first jumper they are considered the bravest because they jumped before they could see what was actually at the bottom. These are just a few ways that Tris and Katniss are similar.
     However, Tris and Katniss are also very different in certain ways. For example, Katniss is different that Tris because Katniss likes to be alone and stand out. Katniss preferred not to form an alliance during the Hunger Games because she felt more comfortable alone. Tris, on the other hand, is always around her friends or around Tobias (Four) and bad things seem to come her way when she's alone; like the time she was attacked by the 4 Candor transfers when she wasn't with her friends. Another way that Katniss and Tris are different is because Katniss wants to stand out and Tris wants to fit in. To Katniss, the Hunger Games were all about standing out so you could get more sponsors and have a better chance at survival. Katniss was extremely excited when she scored the highest rank when she preformed for the Gamemakers and that she stood out above all other contestants. Tris, however, is all about fitting in. For example, when Tris came in first place during the Mental Tests of the Dauntless, she said that "a wave of dread came over me." Also, when Tris's mother came to visit her on Visiting Day, her mother told her to stay in the middle of the pack and to not come in first and stand out; in fear of her daughter's life.  Fitting in is important to Tris because if she stands out and people find out that she's Divergent, bad things can happen to her; such as her being killed at the hands of the Dauntless leaders. These are  just a few ways that Tris and Katniss are different.
     In conclusion, both Katniss and Tris have their similarities and differences, and that makes it fun to read the stories of their adventures.The books would be boring to read if Katniss and Tris had the same character traits. All in all, Tris and Katniss are both great characters that are interesting to follow.
