Dysfunctional Factions

In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, the city is split into factions. They are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The factions are supposed to be an ideal and functional way of organizing the city, but they end up causing tension and splitting up families.

The way of splitting the city up into factions has divided the city, built tension, and splits up families. In the Faction History Textbook, one of the more prominent rules is "Faction before blood." This rule is definitely a source of much of the tension between the factions. When a child chooses to switch factions, tensions build between families and children. This severs important relationships within families.

On page 180, it says "the Erudite have prohibited Abnegation visitors from entering their compound." This is a demonstration of how having different factions splits people apart. Erudite turned on Abnegation because they were so drastically different from Erudite. They are so separated that Erudite hates Abnegation for hoarding supplies that are just a rumor. The problem is that these factions are so divided and don't communicate enough that rumor can easily be taken for truth and develop a hateful relationship between the factions.

My thesis connects to humanity because people are always divided by an infinite number of factors and it is easy to have miscommunications and be separated by differences. This is why it is very important to understand people who are different from us.

In conclusion, the factions in Divergent divide people more than they help people coexist and have a functional society. This is why understanding and communication is important in any society.

What other problems do you see in the structure of the society in Divergent?

  1. Grace,
Well written post! I totally agree with you that the factions are having a lot of negative affects on the country. i think that a government should try and make a country as peaceful and well running as possible! I don't think that the factions are a good idea! I think that its splitting up the country more than helping it! I also think that its interesting how at age sixteen they get to switch their faction. Why does the government decide to do that? Why don't they just make it so that everyone stays in the same faction.

  2. Good post,

I see that the whole Divergent world is in shambles because they take the individual person to seriously. To be different is to be dangerous. One person leaving their 'faction' to another can start a war, though the factions appear to be at peace, so what is it thats silencing those who are different? My guess is that the Abnegation government could be as flawed as some seem to think...

    Very perplexing question!
    Thanks - chase/drat
