When was the last time that you wanted something that you actually needed?

In "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, every little thing in each district is different, and value certain things differently. In District 1, people train as "Careers,"or people who train to be in the games. In District 12, food is scarce, and people fear starvation and dehydration. They also cower in fear at the thought of the Hunger Games. Another thing that changes is what they value. Food is rare and hard to find in the districts far away from the capitol, and in closer districts they have more and better food, that has more vitamins and minerals.

In District 12, Food is valued above anything else. during the games, when Katniss gets a loaf of bread from District 11, she was extremely grateful. The cost of one thing being sent to someone is a lot, never mind how far they were in the games and the actual cost of the bread. It was also a big deal that  District 11 sent something to someone from District 12, saying that 11 was very honored that katniss did what she did. The actual loaf of bread was very useful to Katniss, and I think that it was a symbol of hope and honer not only for Katniss, but that  District 12 was rooting her on and so was Rues family and the rest of 11. This gave her more courage and helped her mentally and physically through the Hunger Games.

In Brooklyn, a lot of people take what they have for granted. If we were in District 12, we would probably die quickly. We are used to food being at our fingertips, and things just come to easy for us. But if you really think about it, When was the last time that you wanted something that you actually needed?

  1. I agree that the gift of a loaf of bread to Katniss after her kind treatment of Rue meant a lot more then it seems like it did. Katniss wasn't hungry, but the people of district 11 wanted her to know that they appreciated her. I think that sending the loaf of bread was even a bit rebellious. Districts sending other districts presents is probably unheard of in the Hunger Games.
