Dystopian Blog Post 1 (prompt 2)

"Who cares? It's all a big show. It's how you're perceived." (Haymitch, 135)

The hunger games, are really just an abusive use of power. One population's entertainment is another's destruction. To the capitol, the hunger games are the same as a reality show. People get in fights, tables get broken. Tributes are tables.

This quote talks about how Peeta and Katniss being (fake) lovers isn't important, even though it ends up being very important. If they weren't pretending to be lovers, this book would have had a very different ending. Most likely, Katniss would be picked off early in the games. I believe this because she wouldn't get a high score, because she wouldn't be as angry at the gamemakers for not paying attention, and wouldn't impress them as she does in the actual story. In the beginning, Katniss had little supplies and the only thing that kept her alive was the other tributes fear because of her high score. So in actuality, the way she is being 'perceived' as star-crossed lovers, is the main thing keeping her alive. Also if she and Peeta weren't pretending to be together, they wouldn't rebel in the end of the games.

"Whoever puts together the highlights has to choose what sort of story to tell." (Katniss, 362).

This quote talks about how much of a 'story' the games its, not a war. This games, the story was about an unfair battle about two people that 'love' each other, resorting to suicidal actions, to stay together. In all, the hunger games isn't about what really happens, it's about the story, and how the characters react to each other. Finding a love story in a blood bath, sounds like a reality T.V

Sorry this wasn't posted until the morning, my email was messed up, and I had fix everything in zero period.

  1. I agree that pretending to be in love saved both Peeta and Katniss's lives in the Hunger Games and out of it. During the games their act got them sponsors who gave them supplies crucial to survival. Most importantly, after the games their false romance gave them an excuse for their act of rebellion in the arena.
