Districts are to Factions as People are to Animals

Question: How are Katniss and Beatrice similar and different?

In class, I am currently reading the book, Divergent, by Veronica Roth. This book is about a girl named Beatrice who is a 16 year old who changed factions from a faction that values selflessness to a faction valuing bravery and courage. Now she is struggling to survive in this dangerous faction and she is struggling to hide her true identity from her new faction. Beatrice's situation is similar to what Katniss's situation is. Katniss was a poor older sister who sacrified herself in the place of her 12 year old sister to fight and kill 10 people in an abandoned piece of land far away from their home. Katniss is also  struggling to survive and struggling to put on a show for the crowd. Katniss and Beatrice are similar and different in many ways.

The two strong-willed women protagonists are similar because they are fighting to be normal. Beatrice is fighting through each trial of initiation for becoming Dauntless so she can calm down and not have to watch her back. She's fighting for a spot in the Dauntless. She's trying to be better than them all to be ranked to the top, no matter how dangerous that is with Peter, her biggest competitor. Katniss is fighting to be alive and to fulfill her promise to her sister Prim. Both girls are fighting for what they believe in.

The two are different because they are surrounded by different societies. Katniss's society is based off of how rich or poor you are and what your district's main occupation is. For example, Katniss lives in district 12 and the poorest part of her district. District 12's main occupation is being a coal miner because they are known for their mines. Another example is Rue's district which is district 8. Rue also lives in the poorer part of the district and their main occupation is a farmer and/or a person who takes care of the crops because they are know for their fine land and soil. Beatrice's society is based off of their personality traits. Beatrice originated and was born from the Abnegation faction and she switched factions because she felt as if she didn't belong there. The Abnegation faction values selflessness. The Amity faction values kindness and is understanding. The Candor faction values honesty. The Erudite faction values intelligence and knowledge. The Dauntless faction values bravery and courage. The people in Beatrice's society are divided literally into these 5 factions for old time reasons sake, and it has been their way of life ever since. Another reason the two girls are different is because of their cruel intentions. Katniss is trying to break the capitol. She continuously tries to manipulate the capitol and their ways so she can break society. She doesn't like being controlled like a puppet by the capitol and she feels that she may be the only person who will ever try and attempt to put a stop to the madness occurring. Beatrice is trying to fit into the society. She wants to be like the Dauntless for initiation so she can finally become a Dauntless and absorb their ways. She does things that wouldn't ever be allowed in the Abnegation and she changes herself completely to be another Dauntless in the crowd. She wants to be unnoticed so she can just fit right in. With the Dauntless, you get noticed if you are either EXTREMELY courageous or you are EXTREMELY weak and terrified of every little thing. Unfortunately for Beatrice, she went from being at the very bottom to the very top so she was definitely noticed throughout initiation.

I think that Katniss and Beatrice(or Tris) are working toward being a protector. They protect everyone everywhere they go. Katniss in the book, Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, protected her sister Prim by competing in her place in the games. She protected Rue from the short amount of time that she was alive from the other players in the games. She also protected Peeta when she had to work with him to win and to stay alive. Beatrice protected Al when she took his place for having knives thrown at her. She protected Christina when Four was about to tell her off. She also protected her family by keeping her 'Divergent' secret to herself and Tori. Katniss and Beatrice thrive for the same goals but at the end of the day, they are their own person and that's all they ever wanted to be.

  1. I agree with what you said in why they are similar, but I'm not sure Tris has a clear belief to fight for. Also, I think they are similar in the way that they see themselves. Katniss has a hard time believing that Peeta actually likes her, and that she is dangerous, and Beatrice takes a while to realize she is dangerous. It takes Beatrice a while before she understands she was always Dauntless, inside. I agree with what you said about their differences too. In Divergent people have a lot more say in how things are run.
